3,487 enforcement stops under Operation Highway Shield produced 51 immigration detentions, 47 criminal charges, 39 incarcerations and 766 unsafe commercial vehicles or drivers placed out of service.
The DOT launched the effort in Florida earlier this year and has expanded it to Illinois, Indiana, Iowa and Ohio after deadly crashes involving drivers DHS says were in the U.S. illegally or improperly licensed.
Officials also cited 36 English-language violations and said some Florida weigh stations found up to half of truckers could not meet proficiency rules needed to read road signs and respond to hazards.
The administration is framing the sweep as both an immigration and highway-safety campaign, while also highlighting three cargo-theft recoveries worth about $1 million.
