YouTube Removes 700 AI Spam Accounts, Tightens Rules on Political Falsehoods

More than 700 accounts flagged since January were removed after California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s office worked with YouTube to identify channels spreading false AI-generated claims about him and the state.
YouTube also took down accounts including New York Reports, Pump Scope and Tax Exodus after Semafor flagged them, saying they violated spam rules against using AI or automation to mass-produce repetitive, deceptive videos.
Some of the videos falsely claimed Walmart, Costco, Shell, Kroger, GM and Ford were shutting California operations; several channels drew tens or hundreds of thousands of views, with one Wells Fargo-themed clip nearing 300,000.
The crackdown comes as YouTube tightens monetization and enforcement around “inauthentic content,” including template-based videos, unclear AI narratives and AI personas discussing sensitive topics.
YouTube says it is leaning on spam controls, AI labels and its likeness-protection program as low-quality AI video grows; Kapwing estimates such content makes up more than 20% of videos shown to new users.
