Promtel, Viasat Forge 2030 Rural Mexico Internet Pact as 24% Remain Offline

Promtel and Viasat signed an agreement running through 2030 to expand telecom infrastructure and broadband access in underserved Mexican communities, with a focus on rural areas where commercial coverage is limited.
Nearly 24% of Mexico’s population still lacks internet access, and the partnership aims to narrow that gap through satellite capacity, technical expertise, training programs and specialized content.
Small telecommunications operators are a central target: Viasat will make satellite capacity available to them, complementing Promtel’s recent financing and technical-assistance push under its National Strategy for Small Operators.
Mexico’s telecom regulator has estimated nationwide internet coverage would require about 30 billion pesos, or $1.73 billion, underscoring why Promtel is leaning on public-private partnerships to extend service where fiber and mobile networks are too costly or impractical.
