Michigan Reports 2 First U.S. Cyclosporiasis Deaths as Cases Top 11,500

Two Michigan residents died after contracting cyclosporiasis, marking the first reported U.S. fatalities from the parasitic illness this year; officials said both had significant underlying conditions and dehydration may have worsened their illness.
Michigan now counts more than 11,500 cases and about 200 hospitalizations, the highest toll in a record U.S. season; the two deaths occurred in people infected before the Taylor Farms lettuce recall.
The largest outbreak spans nine states and has been tied to certain lots of iceberg lettuce, but federal and state investigators are also tracking at least three other active outbreaks with no single source identified.
Nationwide, federal officials have confirmed more than 6,700 cases and are reviewing another 11,000, while cases have been reported in 45 states and unusually high counts have surfaced outside the main lettuce-linked cluster.
