Offshore winds are driving smoke from weeks-old Oregon and Washington wildfires into western cities through at least Wednesday, degrading air in Seattle, Portland and the Interstate 5 corridor.
Thirty large fires are burning in central and eastern Oregon, while three Spokane-area fires have already destroyed hundreds of homes and businesses, supplying the smoke now moving west of the Cascades.
Boise is set to keep ground smoke, and the plume could reach as far south as Salt Lake City before shifting east Thursday and spilling across the Rockies later this week.
Temperatures may approach 90 in Seattle and the upper 90s in Portland, with some neighborhoods from Portland to Eugene topping 100 even as dense smoke could slightly cap daytime highs.
Cooler weather is expected this weekend, but next week's possible monsoon storms in the northern Rockies could bring either needed rain or new lightning, flash-flood and debris-flow risks over burn scars.
