Joint naval and air drills near Scarborough Shoal tested China’s ability to coordinate sea-air operations and rush reinforcements, according to state broadcaster CCTV.
Beijing staged the exercise after Manila submitted a United Nations bid this week to extend its seabed rights to include the disputed shoal, which China said was illegal and invalid.
China also issued new rules for a nature reserve it set up around the shoal last year, banning unauthorized fishing, mining and coral harvesting.
The move follows at least three confrontations in the area last week, including one in which the Philippine military said a Chinese coast guard officer struck and wounded a sailor with a baton.
Scarborough Shoal sits in the South China Sea, a vital trade route with oil and gas deposits that China claims almost in its entirety.
