Octagrabber, an unmanned, remotely operated robot stored aboard the ship, drives out from its garage and positions itself beneath the rocket. It then clamps onto the booster’s octaweb, the circular engine-section structure at the base that surrounds the nine Merlin engines. By gripping that hardpoint, the robot stabilizes the booster and helps prevent it from tipping over in rough ocean conditions. The drone ship itself adds another layer of security. Falcon 9 lifted off from Vandenberg at 8:08 p.m. PDT on Friday, sending 24 Starlink V2 mini satellites into low Earth orbit after a four-day delay from the original July 27 plan.
About an hour later, the upper stage deployed the satellites, expanding a Starlink network that now has more than 10,800 spacecraft in orbit.
B1081 landed on the droneship Of Course I Still Love You a little more than eight minutes after liftoff, completing the booster’s 26th flight and the vessel’s 214th recovery.
The mission was SpaceX’s 90th Falcon launch of 2026 and the 69th batch of Starlink V2 Mini Optimized satellites sent to orbit this year.
