Samsung Unveils Galaxy Watch Ultra2 With 800mAh Battery and 5,000-Nit Display

Q: Can the Galaxy Watch Ultra2 actually deliver its promised 80-hour battery life while powering a blindingly bright 5,000-nit display?

Probably yes in moderate use, but not if that 5,000-nit screen is driven hard for long stretches. Samsung’s 80-hour claim is explicitly tied to favorable conditions: Always On Display off, not peak brightness all the time, and typical mixed use. That makes the number plausible on paper. The Ultra2 pairs a much larger 800mAh battery—about 35% bigger than the previous 590mAh cell—with Qualcomm’s newer Snapdragon Wear Elite chip, which should improve efficiency as well as performance. The key caveat is that “up to 5,000 nits” is a peak figure, not a constant operating level. Smartwatch screens usually hit maximum brightness only outdoors in harsh sunlight or briefly when needed. If the watch spent hours at that output, battery drain would rise sharply. The same is true for power-hungry features like dual-frequency GPS, LTE, workout tracking, and diving or trail tools. Early hands-on reports broadly support Samsung’s positioning, but with limits. Reviewers describe “genuine multi-day use,” often around two to three days in normal wear, sleep tracking, and notifications. That aligns with an 80-hour best-case estimate, but not with sustained outdoor training and a constantly bright display. So the marketing claim is credible as a controlled maximum, not as an all-scenarios expectation. Buyers should expect closer to two to three days in realistic use, and less if they heavily use GPS, LTE, Always On Display, or spend long periods in bright sun.
