Japan Food Inflation Slows to 3.2% in June as Rice Prices Drop 8.7%

Japan’s food prices rose 3.2% year on year in June, down from 3.5% in May and marking the softest increase since July 2024.
2.6% vegetable inflation, 5.7% for cakes and candies, 4.2% for prepared foods and 6.8% for beverages helped cool the overall pace, while cereal prices fell 2.5% for a second straight month.
8.7% lower rice prices deepened declines for a second consecutive month and marked the biggest drop since August 2015; fresh fruit also remained in deflation at 0.9% below a year earlier.
6.9% inflation for fish and seafood, 4.3% for meats and 4.6% for dairy products and eggs showed price pressure persisted in several staples even as headline food inflation eased.
