A year-long review found progress on one benchmark does not bring arrival closer in a straight line: once firms cross thresholds such as single-qubit error rates below 1 in 1,000, the five-year horizon simply resets.
That happens because quantum computing is advancing through multiple rival qubit designs and interdependent metrics—qubit count, connectivity, reliability and control speed—so no single breakthrough proves the whole machine has arrived.
Jurczak says the industry should treat quantum computers as an ecosystem-level technology requiring maturing infrastructure, foundries, cryogenics, software, workforce and even humanities input, not just better hardware.
With many companies still targeting fault tolerance by 2030, the paper suggests that milestone may shift expectations again rather than settle the race around one winning qubit design.
