EU Seeks €30 Billion for 7 AI Gigafactories as It Pushes Computing Independence

19 data centers already operate across the bloc, but Brussels says Europe remains exposed to U.S. and Chinese leverage and wants to triple capacity within five to seven years.
EU officials are pitching the buildout as a sovereignty move for startups, industry and public bodies, even as AI skepticism and concerns over jobs, water, power use and noise could complicate expansion.
