IDEMIA disputed sole blame, saying New Jersey election officials were ultimately responsible for verifying voter eligibility, while Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon warned noncitizens who vote could face prosecution and exclusion from the U.S.
The case also shifted the political debate: CNN host Michael Smerconish said he could no longer claim noncitizen voting “never happens,” while analyst Mark Halperin called for an independent review of whether similar errors occurred elsewhere.
