Summary
Aug. 12, 2026 will bring the first of three solar eclipses over Spain and North Africa, followed by a second total eclipse on Aug. 2, 2027 and an annular “ring of fire” eclipse in January 2028.
ESA says the run is exceptionally rare because orbital geometry has aligned to give Spain two total eclipses and one annular eclipse within about 18 months.
1912 was the last time a total solar eclipse was seen from the Iberian Peninsula, and after 2027 Europe is not due to see another one until 2053.
More than 6 minutes of totality are forecast at peak over Egypt in 2027, driving a Spain-Morocco-US project to observe the sun’s corona from 10 telescope sites in northern Morocco.
Hundreds of public events are planned across Spain for the 2026 eclipse, while scientists say the trio will aid space-weather research and draw students and visitors into astronomy.
