Satya Rhodes-Conway said Thursday body-worn cameras will be included in Madison’s next executive budget, a day after police fatally shot Corey Ruiz, 38, on the city’s near-east side.
Wednesday’s shooting began with a 1 p.m. call about a man checking vehicles; police said Ruiz left on a bicycle, was found about 30 minutes later, pulled a fixed-blade knife during an altercation, and was then shot.
Four officers were involved, two were injured, and all four were placed on administrative leave under department policy as the case is investigated as an open homicide.
The mayor said a camera policy must be written before rollout and the budget would take effect in January; she added she now expects Common Council support after an earlier vote declined funding.
