Not yet, but the risk is real if HBO pushes far beyond the existing novellas before George R.R. Martin writes more. For now, *A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms* has a solid base. Season 1 adapts *The Hedge Knight*, and Season 2 adapts *The Sworn Sword*. There is still a third published Dunk and Egg novella, *The Mystery Knight*, giving the series at least one more clear canonical installment. Parker also says Martin supplied unpublished canonical pages for Season 2, which suggests the author is actively feeding the adaptation with approved material. That makes the show’s current footing much firmer than late-stage *Game of Thrones*, which overtook the novels. It is also different from *House of the Dragon*, whose story is drawn from the already published *Fire & Blood* and has a defined endpoint. The uncertainty begins after the three novellas. Martin has long said he intends to write more Dunk and Egg stories, but he has not done so, and his record on unfinished Westeros books is a serious reason for caution. Parker’s long-range plan — adapting the novellas, pausing so Dexter Sol Ansell can age, then returning to tell Egg’s later life as a prince — is creatively coherent, but it depends on either new Martin material or HBO building from notes, outlines and unpublished fragments rather than finished books. So the future is not built on sand yet. But beyond the current source material, it would rest on a looser form of canon unless Martin produces substantially more on the page.

Ira Parker said every Season 2 episode of HBO's A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will run 35 minutes, far shorter than Game of Thrones' typical 50-to-82-minute installments.
Parker tied the format to George R.R. Martin's Dunk and Egg novellas, saying the source material is less dense and similar in length, making longer episodes harder to justify while preserving a faithful adaptation.
Season 2 production has also been strained by weather: filming moved from Northern Ireland to Spain for The Sworn Sword's drought setting, then faced historic Canary Islands flooding and a roughly two-month delay.
Despite the disruption, filming is in its final weeks and HBO is targeting a first-half 2027 premiere for a series that averaged 26 million global viewers per episode and earned nine Emmy nominations.
