A Tropical Storm Watch now covers Galveston and much of the Upper Texas Coast as Bertha moves closer, with the strongest conditions expected late Thursday afternoon into the evening.
Forecasters expect sustained winds of 25 to 35 mph, gusts up to 45 mph and heavier rain along the Interstate 10 corridor and coastal areas.
Galveston County emergency officials said they are not anticipating widespread impacts, but urged residents to review family plans and restock food, water and medications.
Bertha’s clouds, rain and gusty winds should also ease recent heat after Houston hit a record 102 degrees Wednesday, with Thursday highs seen in the mid-90s.
Officials framed the storm as an early-season warning that preparation now could matter if a stronger hurricane threatens the Texas Gulf Coast later this season.
