Sunny Hostin said Wednesday that Capitol Hill scrutiny of the Smithsonian is really about preventing reparations for Black Americans, calling the hearings an effort to avoid paying descendants of enslaved people.
Tuesday’s hearing questioned National Museum of American History Director Anthea Hartig after a White House report accused the Smithsonian of “ideological capture” and “extreme political activism.”
Hostin argued the administration is trying to reshape how U.S. history is told so the country can evade what she called “financial repair,” saying truth about slavery must come before reconciliation.
She pointed to a March 2026 U.N. General Assembly vote declaring the transatlantic slave trade “the gravest crime against humanity” — backed by 123 countries, opposed by the U.S., Argentina and Israel.
