Three subpoenas issued July 21 target the People’s Forum, BreakThrough News and Tricontinental after the groups allegedly failed to produce a single responsive document in the tax-writing committee’s investigation.
The House Ways and Means Committee is examining whether $39 million from Neville Singham moved through shell companies and donor-advised funds into tax-exempt groups in ways that obscured foreign-linked funding sources.
Aug. 7 is the deadline for records on foreign donors over $5,000, overseas grants, contracts with foreign entities and communications with Singham; the nonprofits’ lawyers had argued the requests lacked a clear legislative purpose and infringed First Amendment protections.
The subpoenas add congressional pressure to a broader federal scrutiny campaign: a Manhattan grand jury is already investigating possible wire fraud, bank fraud and money laundering tied to Singham’s network, though no charges have been announced.
