Gill said the episode showed why conservatives should put progressives "on the spot," calling such ideas offensive to many Americans and difficult to justify in public.
He widened the attack beyond self-described democratic socialists, saying rank-and-file House Democrats now treat the party's left flank as mainstream because they fear backlash from their base.
Gill argued that years of criticism of capitalism and police by mainstream Democrats helped normalize those ideas, leaving the party to face the political consequences now.
