Northumbria Police have opened a corporate manslaughter investigation into Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust over its care and treatment of Valdo Calocane before the June 2023 Nottingham attacks.
The trust oversaw Calocane's care for 2 years before discharging him in September 2022 after missed appointments, and a public inquiry heard the mental health team had effectively "lost" him.
Calocane, diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, had been sectioned 4 times in that period and was warned by a doctor he could end up killing someone.
The attacks on 13 June 2023 killed Barnaby Webber, Grace O'Malley-Kumar and Ian Coates; Calocane later admitted 3 counts of manslaughter on diminished responsibility grounds and 3 attempted murders.
The trust said it would fully cooperate with police and the statutory inquiry, which finished hearing evidence in May and is due to receive final submissions later this year.
