Canada scrapped Friday’s joint ribbon-cutting for the Gordie Howe International Bridge after Trump renewed plans for 50% tariffs on some Canadian imports.
The bridge between Detroit and Windsor will still open to traffic next Monday, but Ottawa said any celebration will now be held only among Canadians.
Trump had already threatened in February to block the multibillion-dollar project over trade disputes, though the opening was cleared earlier this month after the two sides agreed on toll charges.
$126 billion in truck-borne trade moved through the Detroit-Windsor port of entry in 2023, and the new span is expected to relieve the privately owned Ambassador Bridge.
