House Panel Advances GOP Border Bill, Rejecting 3 Democratic ICE and DHS Guardrail Amendments

House Judiciary Republicans sent Rep. Chip Roy’s border bill toward the floor after defeating every Democratic effort to soften or oversee its enforcement provisions.
Three prominent amendments failed: requiring ICE officers to wear body cameras, granting parole to parents of active-duty troops, reservists and veterans, and providing legal counsel to unaccompanied migrant children.
Jamie Raskin’s body-camera proposal also would have barred officers from wearing masks, a response to two fatal ICE shootings in Texas and Maine earlier in July when agents were not using cameras.
Republicans said the revised amendment was unnecessary because body-camera support is already broad and argued the anti-mask provision could expose officers, while Democrats called the bill a bid to lock in Trump-era policies without oversight.
The measure, branded the Permanent Trump Secure Border Act, is designed to make stricter border rules harder for a future president to unwind.
