Apple Adds Liquid Glass Toggle in iOS 26.1 as Complaints Mount Over Transparency

iOS 26.1, iPadOS 26.1 and macOS 26.1 now include a Liquid Glass setting that switches the interface from the default “Clear” look to a more opaque “Tinted” mode.
Apple added the toggle after users complained that Liquid Glass made text and controls harder to read, especially on the iPhone’s smaller screen in apps such as Safari and Apple Music.
The new option sits in Display & Brightness on iPhone and iPad, and in Appearance on Mac, softening transparency while keeping a slight glass effect for better contrast.
The change overlaps with the older Reduce Transparency accessibility feature, while Apple has also used 26.1 updates to restore iPad Slide Over and fix the iPhone alarm screen.
Apple plans finer control in 2027 software including iOS 27, where beta versions already offer a slider to adjust transparency levels.
