More than 23 kilometers of earthen barriers now cut through Gaza, with a southern stretch growing from 500 meters on July 1 to 2.4 kilometers by July 15, according to satellite imagery confirmed by Israel's military.
Israel said the barrier and a surrounding security zone are meant to prevent infiltration and protect troops and nearby Israeli communities along the so-called yellow line set by the October ceasefire.
The buildout is reinforcing Israeli control over more than half of Gaza, where satellite images show towns including Rafah largely leveled, new military roads and bases built, and most Palestinians pushed into crowded coastal tent camps.
That temporary ceasefire boundary is increasingly feared by Palestinians as a de facto border, with Israel still meant under the deal to withdraw further and hand security to an international force.
Implementation has been frozen for months: Israeli forces have killed more than 1,100 Palestinians since the ceasefire began, while militant attacks have killed five Israeli soldiers and disarmament talks with Hamas have made little progress.
