A $1 million figure emerged only when the discussion turned to taxes: Mamdani said he wants higher taxes on people making more than $1 million a year, while insisting that was not his full definition.
Lulu Garcia-Navarro challenged the logic that a janitor and a lawyer could fall under the same label, and Mamdani shifted to a broader argument that residents mainly want to know whether they fit into his political vision.
The same New York Times interview also drew attention because Mamdani called Benjamin Netanyahu a "war criminal" and said his administration is discussing possible legal action if the Israeli leader visits New York for September's UN General Assembly.
