A senator’s primary duty is at home, but that duty often requires acting on events abroad when they raise costs for constituents. That is the core tension in Abdul El-Sayed’s exchange with Jake Tapper. El-Sayed argued that a Michigan Senate campaign should focus on healthcare, education, and household economics, not only on conflicts “6,000 miles away.” Yet the broader facts show why foreign policy cannot be dismissed as remote: the U.S.-Iran war disrupted oil markets, threatened the Strait of Hormuz, pushed crude above $100 a barrel earlier this year, and lifted gasoline and other consumer costs in the United States. Under the Constitution, senators are not just local ombudsmen. They help authorize or restrain war, regulate foreign commerce, approve treaties and ambassadors, and control funding. Those powers matter precisely because overseas conflict can hit families at the pump, raise shipping and fertilizer costs, and worsen inflation. So the practical answer is that a senator’s obligation begins with constituents’ welfare, but it does not end at the water’s edge. If a foreign war is driving up gas prices in Michigan, a senator is expected to do both: challenge or shape the war policy itself and address the domestic fallout through oversight, funding decisions, and energy and economic policy. In that sense, “home” is the priority, but “abroad” is often the arena where the problem must be confronted.
