Summary
One year after a stroke struck on his drive to work, 41-year-old Kaiser Roseville ER physician Terrence Horan completed the 103-mile Death Ride, his fifth finish.
Minutes after losing movement in his right hand, Horan developed speech trouble in the hospital parking lot, and coworkers rushed him to tele-neurology, the ER bedside and a CT scan.
Doctors also found evidence of an earlier stroke Horan had not realized he suffered, helping shape his treatment and recovery after he feared he might never ride again.
Horan now uses his case to urge fast action on stroke symptoms, noting quick care and medication preserved his speech; the CDC says a U.S. stroke occurs about every 40 seconds.
