No. The Birkin’s resale boom has cooled sharply, but the evidence points to a market normalization rather than the end of its status as a top-tier collectible. The clearest sign of the reset is the drop in average resale premiums for Hermès Birkin and Kelly bags, from about 2.2 times retail in 2022 to roughly 1.4 times retail by May 2026, according to Bernstein. That is a meaningful compression, especially because Hermès has raised retail prices by more than 20% over the same period. It weakens the easy-flip trade and suggests buyers can no longer assume rapid gains. But “blue-chip” is not the same as “always rising.” Even after the pullback, many Birkins still trade above boutique price, and the strongest parts of the market remain resilient. Analysts and resale specialists continue to describe Hermès as the benchmark for long-term value retention. The Birkin has also held up better than the Kelly in recent normalization, with a smaller correction from peak levels. The market is becoming more selective. Pristine condition, smaller sizes, classic colors, standard leathers like Togo and Epsom, and rare editions still command strong premiums. Exotic skins and exceptional pieces continue to set records, including a Birkin 20 Faubourg that sold for €635,000 in June 2026. What is over is the idea that any Birkin is a guaranteed high-yield trade. What remains intact is the bag’s role as a relatively durable luxury asset, supported by scarcity, brand control, and deep global demand.
