Brenda Fricker Dies at 81 After Ill Health, Leaving Oscar- and Home Alone 2 Legacy

In her 2025 memoir *She Died Young: A Life in Fragments*, Brenda Fricker said she had wanted to die for as long as she could remember, telling RTÉ: “I can’t remember not wanting to die.” She described a life marked by severe depression, repeated psychiatric hospitalizations and episodes of self-harm. The memoir also recounted childhood trauma, including parental abuse and sexual violence. Brenda Fricker died peacefully in Dublin on Thursday at 81 after a period of ill health, her agent said.
The Irish actress was best known internationally for winning the 1990 best supporting actress Oscar for My Left Foot and for playing the Pigeon Lady in 1992's Home Alone 2.
Dublin-born Fricker began acting in 1964 after working at The Irish Times and later became a household name in Britain as Casualty nurse Megan Roach, a role she reprised repeatedly.
In a 2022 interview, Fricker recalled Home Alone 2 as an "absolutely lovely" job and said she still received residual checks ranging from 46 cents to $10.
