The National League has been stronger in interleague play this season, has more teams above .500, and entered the break with deeper star power on paper. The AL roster, by contrast, was thinned by injuries and star movement to the NL. So the AL’s All-Star dominance says more about history, format, and baseball’s randomness than about a clear present-day talent gulf. This year’s shutout was real; the larger claim of league superiority is much less so.
