The clip doubles as the clearest look yet at Serkis’s dual role on the production, which began filming in New Zealand this month with Serkis both directing and reprising Gollum.
Serkis has said advances since the original Lord of the Rings films now allow more nuanced facial performance capture and location shooting, developments he linked to work on the Apes and Avatar franchises.
The story, drawn partly from Tolkien’s appendices, is set between The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring and follows Aragorn’s hunt to capture Gollum before he can expose the One Ring’s location to Sauron.
The Warner Bros. film is scheduled for release on Dec. 17, 2027, extending the studio’s return to Middle-earth with Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens involved.
