Sam Neill’s final award-nominated turn is likely to be remembered less as a career rewrite than as a fitting summation of what made him distinctive for five decades: intelligence, restraint and emotional complexity. Philip Grenz said Sam Neill died of pneumonia in Sydney on Monday and that his family will hold a private memorial later at the actor's farm in New Zealand.
Grenz issued the clarification after reports containing what he called inaccuracies and falsehoods, stressing Neill had beaten angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma and was cancer-free after CAR-T therapy.
Four completed projects are still due for release in coming months, underscoring that Neill had worked back-to-back over the past year before falling ill.
Steven Spielberg and Taika Waititi were among colleagues paying tribute to Neill, while New Zealand outlets remembered the 78-year-old as a private community-minded figure beyond his film career and winery.
