Summary
1,792 confirmed Ebola cases and 625 deaths had been recorded in the DRC by July 8, with 295 recoveries and infections spread across 37 health zones in Ituri, North Kivu and South Kivu.
Ituri remains the epicenter, accounting for 91% of confirmed cases and nearly 86% of deaths, while two confirmed cases have also been reported in Kisangani in Tshopo Province.
More than 2 million forcibly displaced people live in Ebola-affected or high-risk areas in eastern DRC, and insecurity from armed clashes is limiting access for prevention, surveillance and treatment; 19 internally displaced people are among confirmed cases.
Uganda's outbreak remains comparatively contained at 20 confirmed cases as of July 9, including two deaths, 17 recoveries and one patient still hospitalized.
UNHCR, WHO and other partners are backing DRC and Ugandan authorities to widen surveillance, risk communication and access to services for refugees, asylum-seekers, IDPs and host communities.

2026 Bundibugyo Ebola Crisis: Deadliest Outbreak on Record Exposes Global Health Gaps
Overview
As of July 2026, the Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak has become the deadliest on record, with at least 625 deaths in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and cases spreading into Uganda. The crisis is ongoing and dynamic, with 285 recoveries but 304 suspected cases still under investigation. Health authorities warn that the coming weeks are crucial, as cases continue to rise and the World Health Organization has not confirmed any stabilization. The situation is made worse by the lack of approved vaccines or treatments, putting immense pressure on already strained health systems and making containment especially challenging.
