Summary
Stage 7 winner Tim Merlier said the Bordeaux sprint brought "enormous relief" after Soudal Quick-Step's CEO piled pressure on him before the Tour.
The 33-year-old Belgian arrived short of preparation after a knee injury delayed his 2026 debut until late March, costing him about two months of training.
Bert Van Lerberghe's abandonment on the Tourmalet a day earlier also weakened Merlier's leadout, leaving him without the teammate he said creates space in the bunch.
Merlier said the route itself is the biggest problem for sprinters: the first bunch sprint came only on stage 5, and he sees perhaps four or five chances before opportunities dry up.
The win was Merlier's fourth Tour stage victory and kept intact his record of taking at least one stage in each of his three Tour appearances.
