Summary
The Associated Press called the June 30 primary on Thursday for Victor Marx after a razor-thin Republican gubernatorial contest in Colorado.
Marx took 39.9% to Barbara Kirkmeyer’s 39.4%, with state Rep. Scott Bottoms finishing a distant third in what Kirkmeyer called the closest GOP gubernatorial primary in state history.
Phil Weiser, Colorado’s Democratic attorney general and gubernatorial nominee, quickly cast Marx as out of step with the state and said his candidacy threatens Colorado’s values and future.
Colorado has not elected a Republican governor since 2002, making Marx’s November bid a test of whether a grassroots conservative outsider can break the party’s long statewide drought.
