Virginia Requires Pay Ranges in Job Postings, Expands Noncompete Limits From July 1

Summary
July 1 brought new Virginia employment rules requiring employers to post a good-faith wage or salary range for public openings and internal promotions.
The laws also bar employers from asking about salary history or using it in hiring or pay decisions, and prohibit retaliation against workers who request a pay range or withhold that history.
Employers now must set compensation ranges before advertising jobs, a shift attorneys say gives applicants clearer expectations and saves time during searches.
Noncompete protections were broadened at the same time: healthcare employers generally cannot require healthcare professionals to sign them, and laid-off workers without severance cannot have them enforced.
