Summary
Jim Farley pressed for a rewritten North American trade deal that rewards U.S. vehicle production and penalizes automakers that rely heavily on imports from Japan and South Korea.
Ford says 83% of the vehicles it sells in the United States are built there, with more than 2 million assembled domestically last year and more than six U.S.-built vehicles for every one it imports.
That stance targets rivals with larger import footprints: Toyota imported more than 1.19 million vehicles in 2025, or 47% of its U.S. sales, while GM imported 1.17 million, or 41%.
The push comes after the Trump administration said it would not renew the USMCA in its current form and wants talks on trade deficits, higher parts content and a more America-favoring pact.
