Summary
Two people died and 20 were injured after a westbound coach bus crashed near exit 16 in Queens around 11:45 p.m., then flipped over the median into eastbound traffic.
Police said the 35-year-old driver's bus hit one vehicle, which struck a third car, before the bus crossed into oncoming lanes and collided with two more vehicles.
The bus driver and one passenger were pronounced dead at the scene; one other driver was hospitalized in critical condition, while three drivers and the remaining bus passengers were listed in stable condition.
About 79 fire and EMS personnel responded, and both directions of the Long Island Expressway were shut at 50th Street before all lanes reopened Tuesday afternoon.
The National Transportation Safety Board has opened a federal investigation as New York police continue examining the cause of the multi-vehicle crash.
