Summary
Equinix Japan, NTT East and Sakura Internet will run a live proof of concept linking Sakura’s Ishikari data center in Hokkaido with Equinix facilities in Tokyo over NTT’s all-photonic network technology.
The trial will measure throughput, latency and other performance metrics to define operating conditions for practical deployment, with NTT East supplying IOWN-based connectivity, Sakura the test platform, and Equinix the interconnection design.
Equinix’s Fabric may also be used to extend the setup to external cloud services and partner ecosystems, testing how the optical link supports broader distributed computing environments.
The project reinforces NTT’s push into IOWN and AI-native infrastructure after weak mobile results, as the company argues photonic links can connect distributed AI data centers and reduce reliance on massive centralized facilities.
