SunZia Transmission Line Starts Moving 3,000 MW of Wind Power Across 550 Miles

$11 billion SunZia is now fully online, with its transmission system carrying up to 3,000 MW of New Mexico wind power to Arizona and the wider western grid.
The 550-mile, ±525-kilovolt HVDC line can supply about 1 million homes and is meant to ease rising demand from data centers, electrification and industrial growth.
That line is the largest voltage source converter-based HVDC installation in the U.S., letting operators shift wind power quickly as solar output fades and helping stabilize the grid during disruptions.
Pattern Energy and Hitachi Energy say SunZia could avoid about 9 million metric tons of CO2 in its first full year—roughly equal to removing 3 million gasoline cars from the road.
