What the finale makes clear is that the danger is real and likely to drive Season 2. Loftis learns that Ruth Livingston was not the last descendant after all; she was his late wife Lauren’s mother, which makes Evan the true final heir. He also knows that anyone born on Widow’s Bay, including himself and Evan, will die if they try to leave, so escape is not an option. The island has already shown a willingness to accept brutal sacrifice. Sheriff Bechir shot Ruth when he believed her death was necessary to protect the town and his own child. That establishes a grim precedent: if Evan’s identity becomes known, some islanders could plausibly decide that sacrificing one child is the price of freeing everyone else. Katie Dippold has effectively confirmed that this is the central threat ahead. She said Loftis’s next challenge is protecting Evan, “especially if anyone on the island discovers his son’s true identity.” She also teased that the curse is not satisfied anyway: Kenneth only temporarily appeased it, it “wants more,” and the underground torture chamber points to a deeper history of ritual violence. So the answer is no for now, but the show is clearly setting up that possibility as a major Season 2 conflict.
