Six people were aboard the NetJets-operated Cessna Citation Latitude when it crashed on Laredo’s Loop 20 late Tuesday, killing Austin tech entrepreneur Josh Baer; five survivors — two pilots and three teenagers — were hospitalized.
Just before 10 p.m., the crew reported mechanical difficulties and declared an emergency while diverting from a San José del Cabo-to-Austin flight to Laredo, with tracking data showing a controlled descent until contact ended about 600 feet up.
The jet broke apart, caught fire and struck a moving vehicle on the highway; at least one person from that vehicle was hospitalized and later released, and firefighters also rescued a small pet from the wreckage.
Five police officers were taken to a hospital after suffering injuries during the rescue, while bystanders and emergency crews forced open the aircraft door to pull people out.
