Summary
One person died Friday evening after an experimental two-seat Lancair 235 went down in a grassy field during takeoff near Twin Oaks Airpark in Hillsboro, Oregon.
Witnesses said the plane crashed just after liftoff and ignited a grass fire that spread to a nearby field, sending up a large column of black smoke before firefighters contained it.
Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue found the aircraft's only occupant dead and said no other injuries were reported; flights in and out of the airpark were canceled for the rest of Friday.
FAA and NTSB investigators were called in to take over the case, and officials said the cause remains under investigation at the airpark, which hosts flight training programs.
