Allen has said he was not sober during the formative years of his older daughter, Katherine, now an adult. He acknowledged that he was often gone and that her mother did most of the raising. He has said he later made amends to Katherine, who he says does not hold it against him. In his own telling, that relationship was shaped by his drinking and by the fact that he was less available. With his younger daughter, Elizabeth, Allen says the experience has been “much different” because she has only known him sober. After a 1998 DUI, he entered rehab and has now been sober for nearly 30 years. That gave him a chance to be a more stable, engaged parent, focused on practical life lessons and a closer day-to-day bond. In short, prison pushed Allen toward self-correction, but sobriety is what most clearly split his fatherhood into two distinct eras.
