Summary
Helen Mirren said a man in London called her an “evil Zionist bitch” after confronting her over her support for Israel, describing the attacker as possibly over-passionate or mentally unstable.
Footage of the encounter circulated last month, but the Metropolitan Police said in May the Tower Hill incident was believed to have happened at the end of last year and no further action followed talks with Mirren and husband Taylor Hackford.
At the Taormina film festival, the 80-year-old actor reaffirmed support for Israel’s existence while condemning its Gaza assault as “crimes against humanity” and saying “evil forces are rising” there too.
Mirren has long tied her stance to the Holocaust and her time in Israel after the 1967 war, but said she would have joined protests against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
